Corrosion of prestressing steel is particularly dangerous for there is no possibility of current control of the tendons and the destruction caused by corrosion is not preceded by any signs. Corrosion of prestressing steel has usually irreversible effects and in some cases can lead even to a complete break of the tendon. The Authors present an example of a broken 31\-strand tendon \(steel strength 1860MPa\), after only 10 years from the construction. Because of such serious failure the Authors analyzed their own experience and modern knowledge concerning causes, effects and prevention methods of corrosion of prestressing steel in post\-tensioned structures. In the paper the Authors discussed factors influencing prestressing steel corrosion, chemical processes connected with corrosion, its causes and effects. They also shown corrosion prevention methods in new structures as well as improvement methods for structures that are already damaged with corrosion."]
